I met with two lovely people tonight who had questions about their estate planning and whether it was something they could do for themselves or should they hire me?

I told them what I tell all of the people who ask me this question – you can prepare all of the paperwork yourself for almost any legal task and do a reasonably good job. Finding a lawyer willing to review that paperwork and help deepen your understanding of what you’ve drafted or point out missing items is how to have the best of both worlds.

I encouraged them to look for free resources and then hire me for a final review and to answer any lingering questions. Demystifying the law is one of the primary reasons I chose to become a lawyer – I’d much rather make certain individuals know that they are perfectly capable of shaping their legal life without having to be rich or go broke.
